MicroRNA‑525 enhances chondrosarcoma malignancy by targeting F‑spondin 1

Abstract: Increasing evidence has suggested that microRNAs (miRNAs; miRs) are extensively involved in the progression of chondrosarcoma (CHS). However, few studies have investigated the functional role of miR-525 in CHS tissues and cells. In the present study, it was discovered that miR-525 levels were decreased in CHS tissues and cells. Dual luciferase assays indicated that F-spondin 1 (SPON1) is a target gene of microRNA (miR)-525. In addition, miR-525 overexpression suppressed SW1353 cell migration and invasion and e… Show more

“…miR-525-5p is differentially expressed in many human cancer types, including CRC. [38][39][40] To assess the regulatory roles of miR-525-5p in CRC, we conducted a series of functional assays. Ectopic miR-525-5p expression led to a significant reduction in cellular proliferation, migration, and invasion as well as in an increase in apoptosis in CRC cells.…”

“…However, a compelling clue lies in the significantly lower levels of miR-525, a microRNA directly targeting SPON1, observed in chondrosarcoma patients. This suggests a potential regulatory pathway: decreased miR-525 expression could contribute to increased malignancy by deregulating SPON1, leading to enhanced cell migration and invasion [ 45 ]. This indicates miR-525′s potential as a biomarker for the progression of chondrosarcoma.…”

“…MicroRNA-525 can also inhibit tumor cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Overexpression of miR-525 can inhibit the migration and invasion of chondrosarcoma cells and induce cell apoptosis, and downregulated miR-525 activates the FAK/Src/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway by targeting F-spondin1 gene to promote the malignant progression of chondrosarcoma [15].…”
