MicroRNA-335 Acts as a Candidate Tumor Suppressor in Prostate Cancer

Abstract: MicroRNA-335 (miR-335) acts as a tumor suppressor or a tumor promoter in different human malignancies. However, the involvement of miR-335 in prostate cancer (PCa) is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional and clinical significance of miR-335 in PCa. miR-335 expression in 3 PCa cell lines (LNCaP/DU145/PC3) and in 20 clinical PCa tissues were detected by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR compared with corresponding controls. The function of miR-335 was investig… Show more

“…Based on bioinformatical predication, a luciferase reporter assay was performed and PAX6 was identified as a novel target of miR-335, which has been demonstrated to be implicated in various types of cancer (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). However, the detailed role of miR-335 in the development and progression of various types of cancer remains controversial.…”

“…miR-335 has been demonstrated to be implicated in multiple types of malignant tumor, including small cell lung cancer, osteosarcoma, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, meningioma and gastric cancer (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). Recently, Jiang et al have suggested that miR-335 upregulation is associated with advanced tumor progression in glioma and is an independent marker for the predication of the clinical outcome of patients with glioma (23).…”

“…The upregulation of miR-335 may have inhibited gastric cancer cell invasion and metastasis in vitro and in vivo by directly targeting SP1, as well as acting indirectly through the Bcl-W-induced phosphoinositide 3-kinase-Akt-SP1 pathway (31). The reduced expression of miR-335 was also identified in human prostate cancer tissues and cell lines; miR-335 expression level was associated with a high Gleason Score, advanced clinical stage and metastasis in patients with prostate cancer (32). Enforced miR-335 expression decreased the growth and metastatic characteristics of prostate cancer cells in vitro (32).…”

“…miR-335 underexpression has been validated in three studies [19,29,32] and this microRNA is considered to be a potent tumor suppressor microRNA in several human cancer tissues [42,43]. No data are available yet on its targets in the adrenal cortex, but in other tissues miR-335 suppresses tumor cell migration, invasion, and metastasis [44][45][46][47] (Table 2).…”
