MicroRNA-203 regulates caveolin-1 in breast tissue during caloric restriction

Abstract: Caloric restriction has been shown to increase lifespan in several organisms and to delay onset of age-related diseases. The transcriptional response to caloric restriction has been studied for mRnAs, while the microRnA signature following caloric restriction remains unexplored. here, we characterize the microRnA expression in mouse breast tissue before and after caloric restriction, reporting several changes in the microRnA expression profile. In particular, miR-203 is found to be highly induced by caloric re… Show more

“…showed that miR‐133a attenuates metastasis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells by targeting caveolin‐1. Other studies from our laboratory and other groups showed that microRNAs (miR‐195, miR‐203, miR‐199a‐3p and miR‐218) significantly inhibit migration and invasion in cancer cells by targeting caveolins . In an independent study, Li et al .…”

“…Our findings demonstrate a role for miRNAs in dietary restriction of C. elegans , but given the conservation of miRNAs and PHA-4 and SKN-1 across species, these interactions may also be conserved in higher species. A few studies have reported numerous changes in the mammalian miRNA expression profile under dietary restriction [5658]. Thus, it may also hold true that the miRNAs induced upon dietary restriction in mammals may be responsible for transducing the effects of lifespan extension in higher species, as well.…”

“…These results suggested that CAV1 induction by butyrate was transcriptionally regulated. Number of recent studies have shown that microRNAs, such as miR-802 [34] miR-199a-5p [35] and miR-203 [36] directly suppress the expression of CAV1 by binding to its 3 0 -UTR region. Butyrate may also alter miRNA expression in the cells [24].…”
