MicroRNA‐155 in oral squamous cell carcinoma: Overexpression, localization, and prognostic potential

Abstract: MiRNA-155 was overexpressed in OSCC and it was located in the cancer nest, inflammatory area, and vascular endothelium of OSCC. High miRNA-155 expression level in ACF may predict poor prognosis in patients with OSCC.

A variety of cell culture and clinical studies demonstrate an upregulation of hsamir-155-5p in OSCC/HNSCC tissue and cell lines.…”

“…The major difference is that for oral cytology study, the normal group consists of matching healthy subjects, and for the tissue sample study, the normal group are histologically normal adjacent tissues from the same cancer patients. It is worth noting that microRNA dysregulation has also been detected in oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) [1518], and in the field of cancerizationin [1922]. The concept of field cancerization, initially introduced by Slaughter et al in 1953 to describe the histologically normal epithelium adjacent to oral cancer that harbors early genetic changes [43], which explains the development of multiple primary tumors and local recurrent cancer.…”

“…Recent studies also suggested that microRNA markers may have predictive values for the progression of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) [1518]. Furthermore, microRNA dysregulation has also been detected in the field of cancerization [1922]. As such, microRNA-based molecular analysis can enhance the standard histopathological analysis for early detection and monitoring of field of cancerization which have profound implications for cancer prevention.…”

“…Multivariate analysis revealed that serum miR-155 expression level was independent prognostic factors for OS, as well as PFS. miR-155 was found to be overexpressed in various solid tumors, including CRC [9][10][11][12]. Moreover, miR-155 has been shown to enhance tumor invasion and migration, and acts as a mediator of EMT [13].…”
