In recent years, microplastics (MPs) have gained significant attention as a persistent environmental pollutant resulting from the decomposition of plastics, leading to their accumulation in the human body. The liver, particularly of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), is known to be more susceptible to the adverse effects of environmental pollutants. Therefore, to investigate the potential impact of MPs on the liver of diabetic mice and elucidate the underlying toxicological mechanisms, we exposed db/db mice to 0.5 μm MPs for 3 months. Our results revealed that MPs exposure resulted in several harmful effects, including decreased body weight, disruption of liver structure and function, elevated blood glucose levels, impaired glucose tolerance, and increased glycogen accumulation in the hepatic tissue of the mice. Furthermore, MPs exposure was found to promote hepatic gluconeogenesis by perturbing the PP2A/AMPK/HNF4A signaling pathway. In addition, MPs disrupt redox balance, leading to oxidative damage in the liver. This exposure also disrupted hepatic lipid metabolism, stimulating lipid synthesis while inhibiting catabolism, ultimately resulting in the development of fatty liver. Moreover, MPs were found to induce liver fibrosis by activating the Wnt/β‐catenin signaling pathway. Furthermore, MPs influenced adaptive thermogenesis in brown fat by modulating the expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and genes associated with mitochondrial oxidative respiration thermogenesis in brown fat. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that MPs induce oxidative damage in the liver, disturb glucose and lipid metabolism, promote hepatic fibrosis, and influence adaptive thermogenesis in brown fat in diabetic mice. These findings underscore the potential adverse effects of MPs on liver health in individuals with T2DM and highlight the importance of further research in this area.

This trial was performed in order to investigate the response of zebrafish (Danio rerio) to dietary exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS‐NPs) under laboratory conditions on fish growth and health. Healthy zebrafish (n=240) were divided into 12 tanks and fed with diets including 0 (T0), 100 (T1), 500 (T2), and 1000 (T3) mg kg−1 synthesized polystyrenes nanoplastics (PS‐NPs) for 30 days. At the end of trial, fish fed the PS‐NPs supplementation showed weight gain percentages of 79.45%, 70.35%, and 61.88% for T1, T2, and T3 groups, respectively, compared with 87.39% in the control fish. The SOD, GPX and MDA activities and cortisol levels increased by 47%, 32% and 35% and 46%, respectively, especially at high‐dose administration (p < 0.05). The expression of GPX (T2‐81% and T3‐82%) and SOD (T2‐101% and T3‐187%) were remarkably upregulated in T2 and T3 groups. Moreover, the relative gene expression of HSP70, interleukin‐1 (IL1), Interferon γ (IFN‐γ) and tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α) increased by 178%, 202%, 154% and 307%, respectively, especially at high‐dose administration (p < 0.05). The results of the present study demonstrated that exposure to PS‐NPs especially at high concentrations (500 and 1000 mg kg−1 of diet) negatively influenced growth, health status‐, antioxidant‐, and immunity‐related gene expression responses of zebrafish.

The impact of microplastics (MPs) on the environment is a major concern that affects not only marine life but also the entire ecosystem. MPs are defined as tiny artificial polymer‐based particles, measuring less than 5 mm in length. The impact of these compounds on human health concerns the metabolic alterations, reproductive disorders, neurological disorders, and hormone‐dependent tumors. Due to the problems involved in the improper disposal of this material in nature (in beaches, rivers, lakes, ponds, and oceans), and also, all the risks of MPs both for the ecosystem and for all beings alive, it became extremely important to develop a methodology that makes it possible to quantify this material when present in aqueous media. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present a methodology developed in the laboratory to quantify MP fragments present in an aqueous media. For this, phantoms were developed with plastic fragments from 0.18 to 0.71 mm, in diameter, which were later analyzed using the computed microtomography technique (microCT). The microCT is a non‐invasive imaging technique that uses X‐rays to produce detailed 3D images of the internal structure of an object. The results showed a good contrast pattern, and the quantitative analysis represented satisfactory results for all samples, with relative error below 20%.
