“…Although microplastic uptake by fish is likely affected by MPs abundance, this correlation seems not to be strictly dependent on MPs abundance in water or sediments. Several studies demonstrated that higher MPs environmental concentration does not necessarily translate into higher ingestion [71,87,106,111,121]. Other factors, in fact, can drive the ingestion of MPs, as demonstrated by laboratory experiments with zebrafish (Danio rerio) by Kim and colleagues [141], in which a higher food availability has been demonstrated to trigger an increased MPs ingestion, independently of the MPs concentration in water.…”

“…In sh samples, the overall relative abundance of MPs followed a similar trend as in the surface water, and prominent size MPs were dominant (43%), followed by small size MPs (29%) and medium-sized MPs (28%). MPs with sizes up to 1000 µm reported being highest (70.5%) in a study by Sun et al (2020), whereas Wang et al (2020) reported that 80% of the detected MPs belonged to the size range of 500-1000 µm. The relative proportion of ingested MPs sizes also varied according to the sh feeding habit.…”

“…Recently, Kuśmierek and Popiolek, (2020) described the similar trend of the highest proportion of bres (99.8%) in the gastrointestinal tract of freshwater sh. Zhang et al (2020 b) and Wang et al (2020) also reported that the bres with the highest concentration in native freshwater sh belonging to different trophic levels from Pearl River South China. The possible reason for the highest proportion of bres in sh species may be its di culty to excrete with faeces as bres stick with intestinal walls rmly compared to other shape MPs.…”

“…The protection of the Songhua River and the Huai River requires substantial investment to improve clean water availability from them since they are part of the top seven important rivers in China. According to Wang (Wang, Zhang et al 2020) both the quantity of poor water (Grade V+) in both the Huai and Songhua Rivers reached 2.8% and Hua 0.6% respectively. However, the two rivers have not been able to improve on the percentage of Grade 1-III levels to the estimated 70% in the Ten Water Target.…”

“…In 2019, a total of 2.5 million tons of pollutants were removed from the river. Over a period the water colour in the towns and villages in its vicinity had changed from white to a shade of orange as a results of the impact of different forms of varying industrial e uent (Wang, Zhang et al 2020). According to the Guangdong provincial administration, an accumulated amount of 120 billion RMB (about 16.9 billion U.S. dollars) were invested into the pollution treatment of these heavily-polluted rivers in Shenzhen and to enhance the landscape enhancement of its surrounding areas (Guo, Chen et al 2020).…”
