“…It must be noted that the negligible health risks determined in this study were based on the use of PVC microplastics from the laboratory adsorption experiment to simulate microplastic adsorption of heavy metals in natural water, and this was done to reduce interferences from other factors as much as possible. However, the different types, densities, shapes, and particle sizes of microplastics vary in the amounts of heavy metals they contain or can adsorb from the environment (Li et al 2020 ; Naqash et al 2020 ; Cao et al 2021 ; Khalid et al 2021 ). For instance, Pb concentrations determined for foamed polyurethane (PU) plastics from Whitsand Bay reached 16,000 μg·g −1 (Turner and Lau 2016 ), which may result in tremendous health risks.…”
