“…Dated beach deposits from the estuarine margin of the central zone of the spit suggest its onset at least 6,500 years ago, coincident with a significant reduction on the rate of sea-level rise ca 7,000 cal year BP (Leorri et al 2012). This suggests spit formation approximately 1,000 years before previously published dates for SW Portugal (Alday et al 2006;Freitas et al 2002;Cearreta et al 2007), but simultaneous with similar systems along the northern coast of Portugal (Naughton et al 2007) and southern coast of Spain (Goy et al 2003). Differences in timing could be explained by the fact that the age of barriers has been previously inferred from depositional changes within lagoons or estuaries whereas the present work is based on the actual age of the coastal barrier.…”
