Micronutrient Deficits Are Still Public Health Issues among Women and Young Children in Vietnam

Abstract: BackgroundThe 2000 Vietnamese National Nutrition Survey showed that the population's dietary intake had improved since 1987. However, inequalities were found in food consumption between socioeconomic groups. As no national data exist on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies, a survey was conducted in 2010 to assess the micronutrient status of randomly selected 1526 women of reproductive age and 586 children aged 6–75 mo.Principal FindingsIn women, according to international thresholds, prevalence of zin… Show more

“…The low IDA prevalence of 6% therefore is unexpected. A recent study conducted in Vietnamese children and nonpregnant women revealed results similar to those of this study, with markedly reduced prevalences of anemia, ID, and IDA [20]. Similar findings were also obtained in many studies conducted in Thailand in that the prevalence of IDA was not high [29,30,31,32].…”

“…A recent study among Vietnamese women of reproductive age and young children showed a prevalence of 9.1-11.6% for anemia, 12.9-13.7% for ID, and 3.2-5.4% for IDA [20]. Among pregnant women in Thua Thien Hue, the prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA is limited.…”

“…Traditional Vietnamese diets are dominated by starchy staples (mainly rice), are lower in fat and despite increases in protein intake over past two decades only about a third of protein comes from animals sources foods (which have higher bioavailability for several micronutrients) [44]. Prior research in Vietnam has also implicated a low prevalence of anemia (12%) and iron deficiency (14%) despite a high prevalence of other micronutrient deficiencies of public health concern (zinc deficiency (67%) and vitamin B12 deficiency (11.7%) [45]. Likewise, recent studies from Cambodia [46], Malawi [47] and Bangladesh [48,49] have reported a low prevalence of iron deficiency among women.…”

“…We included nationally representative surveys of PSC (6–59 months of age as the primary target age range, with some flexibility to include surveys with slightly older children; 10–75 months [14]) and WRA (15–49 years) in the analyses. Studies and surveys representative only of either urban or rural populations were also included to obtain separate estimates for urban and rural settings.…”
