Micronuclei in breast aspirates. Is scoring them helpful?

Abstract: An increase in micronuclei values was seen from fibroadenoma to infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Micronuclei scoring can be used as a biomarker on fine needle aspiration cytology smears of breast carcinoma.

“…Few studies of micronucleus on breast cytology have compared the benign and malignant groups. [ 7 8 9 ] No studies have been conducted comparing micronucleus frequency in benign, adenosis, usual/atypical ductal hyperplasia, and malignant cases according to the grade in a single study group.…”

“…In the present study, we evaluated the presence and frequency of MN in pleural fluid cytology. The limited studies in this field clearly pointed out that neoplastic lesions had high MN counts compared to their benign counterparts (22)(23)(24). Consistently with the literature, we found that all the cytological smears with a malignant outcome had a significantly higher MN count compared to benign ones (P < 0.001, Table 1).…”

“…The usefulness of micronuclei in distinguishing malignant lesions from benign lesions using cytological specimens has been well clariied [41][42][43]. A micronucleus is the small nucleus that forms whenever a chromosome or its fragment is not incorporated into one of the daughter nuclei during cell division and it serves as an indicator of CIN.…”
