Micronized CaCO3: a feasible alternative to limestone filtration for conditioning and (re)mineralization of drinking water?

Abstract: Worldwide limestone filtration is used in many treatment plants for the conditioning and (re)mineralization of drinking water to increase concentrations of Ca^ ' and HCO3 , pH and saturation index, thereby improving the quality of the water regarding corrosion control, buffering and taste.Typical applications include (very) soft groundwater with (very) low alkalinity and desalinated water. In Norway, some plants use a product made of ground natural limestone, called micronized CaC03 slurry (MCCS), which is dose… Show more

“…There are many remineralization techniques of desalinated water 12,13,18 . ONEE adopted three remineralization techniques in plants of the mentioned areas: (1) remineralization by hydrated lime in presence of CO 2 in Laâyoune desalination plant (SDL), (2) remineralization by a passage of water through limestone bed in Daoura demineralization plant (SDD) and (3) remineralization by injection of calcium chloride CaCl 2 and sodium bicarbonate NaHCO 3 in Sidi Elghazi (or Agti Elghazi) plant (SDS) ( Figure 2).…”

“…The dissolution kinetics of calcium carbonate are controlled by the particle's surface area (Sjöberg 1976;Gude et al 2011;Hasson et al 2017). A larger available surface area increases the rate of dissolution.…”

“…As a result, an alternative to calcium carbonate filtration is the addition of powdered CaCO 3 material, which has a higher specific surface area, thus enhancing its dissolution and reducing the required contact times. This method entails a dosing larger than the calcite dissolution capacity of the water to significantly speed up the reaction (Gude et al 2011). A further process step, such as ultrafiltration (UF), is then required to remove the excessive CaCO 3 powder suspension.…”

“…A major parameter governing the kinetics of solid particles dissolution is the contact area exposed by the particles. Since contact area per unit volume is inversely proportional to particle size, micron-size particles expose a contact area 3 orders of magnitude larger than that of millimeter size particles . Dissolution of micron-size particles is therefore expected to have the adavantage of reacting at very high rates.…”
