Microneedle delivery of botulinum toxin type A combined with hyaluronic acid for the synergetic management of multiple sternal keloids with oily skin: A retrospective clinical investigation

Abstract: Background: For the treatment of sternal keloids, corticosteroid therapy has side effects including abnormal sebum secretion and acne. Relapse of keloids is common after corticosteroid injection in patients with oily skin. To reduce side effects and keloid recurrence, we used a combination of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) and hyaluronic acid (HA) as synergetic management for multiple sternal keloids in patients with oily skin. Methods:In total, 58 patients with multiple sternal keloids who received monthly st… Show more

“…A therapeutic mechanism has been suggested wherein compression therapy accelerates scar maturation by affecting the cells around endothelial cells or glands. Experimental results on the regeneration effects during compression were confirmed by inhibiting cells such as myofibroblasts or keratinocytes that stimulate scar formation in the epidermis and dermis [22,31]. We noted that the changes in erythema and scar thickness were reduced in the pressure-monitoring group, which is similar to previous research results.…”

“…13 A patient satisfaction scale was used to evaluate functional results and appearance at the donor or recipient site, presented as a four-point grading scale (1 = very satisfied, 2 = satisfied, 3 = slightly satisfied, and 4 = unsatisfied). 14 Twelve fresh cadaveric specimens of human feet from six bodies donated for research were obtained from the repository in our institution. The current study is considered exempt from institutional review board approval as the data were collected retrospectively and analyzed without any personal identifiers.…”

“…In clinic, the combined treatment of HyA with cortisone showed a complete resolution of the KD without recurrence several months later in a KD patient [402]. Also, a combination of bleomycin (BLM) and HyA permitted the delivery of BLM without pain, a fast onset of action and good bioavailability, and it inhibited the proliferation of human HS fibroblasts and the secretion of TGF-β1 in vitro [403]. Patients with multiple sternal KDs who received monthly steroid injections received an additional injection of BTX-A/HyA on the same day as the first injection of the steroid.…”
