Micron-size bending radii in silica-based waveguides

Abstract: Sharp bends in low index contrast waveguides using tapered air trenches are proposed. To minimize claddingtrench junction loss, "cladding tapers" are designed to provide adiabatic mode shaping between low and high index contrast regions.
