Micromorphology and fractal analysis of nickel–carbon composite thin films

Abstract: In this study nickel-carbon (Ni-C) nanocomposite thin films composed of Ni nanoparticles with different average sizes embedded in amorphous hydrogenated carbon, were prepared through the combination of radio frequency sputtering and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition techniques. Such samples were used as experimental models to study the three dimensional surface morphology properties in thin films by atomic force microscopy imaging and fractal analysis over square areas of 1 μm 9 1 μm. The deposition ti… Show more

“…The fractal dimension of the thin films surface has been extensively studied as a parameter to study the complexity of surface texture 35 , 62–64 . Recently, superficial entropy, fractal succolarity, and fractal lacunarity have been successfully introduced to explain the behaviour of thin film microtexture 47 .…”

“…AFM has been an important tool for analyzing biological surfaces (e.g., Gonçalves et al, 2017; Sobola et al, 2017; Zaneta et al, 2017; Matos et al, 2018; Almeida et al, 2019; Ferraro et al, 2020). The most relevant aspects of topographical features and fractal parameters have been reported using this technique (e.g., Arman et al, 2015; Ţəlu et al, 2015; Jing & Tang, 2016; Ţălu et al, 2016 b , 2018; Ansari et al, 2017; Yadav et al, 2017; Astinchap, 2019; Shakoury et al, 2020). The characterization of plant leaf morphology by AFM has already been reported in the literature (Ramos et al, 2016; Salcedo et al, 2016).…”

“…Due to a layer of its oxide acting as a protection, it is corrosion-resistant, so its thin layers are used to cover other metals to prevent corrosion, which has many uses for the production of industrial tools [1][2][3].…”
