Micromixing and Macromixing Effects in Unsteady Chemical Reaction System

Abstract: This study presents a novel model that combines the tank-in-series model and the random replacement IEM (interaction by exchange with a mean environment) model for investigating the effects of both imperfect micromixing and macromixing. Two unstable chemical reaction model systems are simulated, the Oregonator model and the pH oscillator model. Dynamical behaviors include steady state, relaxation oscillation, small oscillation, and chemical chaos. Simulation results revealed significant effects of mixing; howe… Show more

“…However, to have better control on the precipitation kinetics and particle size distribution, more sophisticated techniques and apparatus are needed to achieve rapid micro-mixing [19], which is mixing on the molecular scale dominated by diffusion [24]. Such methods include high-gravity controlled precipitation (HGCP) [25][26][27], flash precipitation using confined liquid impinging jets (CLIJ) [20,28,29] or multi-inlet vortex mixers (MIVM) [22,[30][31][32][33], supercritical fluid technology [34][35][36], and sonoprecipitation [37].…”

“…In numerical simulation of a complex chemical reaction system in chemical reactor, skeleton mechanisms are often used in place of detailed chemistry since comprehensive chemical kinetics can involve too many species and reactions to be considered in calculations. For instance, with skeleton models for oscillatory reactions, the effects of nonideal mixing in the flow reactor were demonstrated (Hsu et al, 1994, Chang et al, 1996, 1999. The manner in dispute is whether the skeleton model can represent the real system of comprehensive scheme (Lee et al, 1997;Sirdeshpande et al, 2001;Banerjee and Ierapetritou, 2003).…”
