“…Initial attempts to inject spermatozoa into the ooplasm were largely unsuccessful ( Fishel et al ., 1993 ; Lacham‐Kaplan & Trounson, 1995), and there developed a feeling that the technique would not be successful in man. Other procedures to improve fertilization rates with oligoasthenotratatozoospermia (OAT) were developed, including zona opening, partial zona dissection (PZD) and subzonal insemination (SUZI), which allowed spermatozoa access to the oolemma ( Odawara & Lopata, 1989; Fishel et al ., 1993 ). The results with these techniques in humans were generally poor with only about 20% of oocytes fertilizing normally, and there were few pregnancies.…”
