MicroJet Reactor Technology: An Automated, Continuous Approach for Nanoparticle Syntheses

Abstract: A new design of a confined impinging jet microreactor has been applied for continuous‐flow syntheses of metal chalcogenide nanomaterials. The microjet reactor is an automated, flexible, scalable, and thus industrially viable technology allowing a strict control over process parameters for the design of materials with tunable properties. Due to the short mixing times in the µs to ms range, crystallite nucleation and crystal growth are well separated and enable concentration‐limited particle growth and thus nano… Show more

“…A detailed description of the MJR synthesis testing unit was provided by Hiemer et al. [17] Figure 14 shows the simplified setup. Briefly, two High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) pumps transport the precursor solutions, typically aqueous solutions of metal salt(s) including stabilizer (P1) and sulfur source (P2), downstream from their reservoirs.…”

“…It is worth mentioning that there are many confined jet reactors used to prepare nanoparticles, which is a good reference for reactions involving aryl diazonium salts prepared in situ. [112][113][114] In addition, with the advantages of more precise control of the light radiation time and uniform light in a continuous flow, the application of photocatalytic aryl radical generation in flow has gradually attracted interest. In 2017, Basso et al proposed using [Ru(bpy 3 )]Cl 2 as a photocatalyst in a continuous flow system to prepare isochromanones (25) from aryl diazonium tetrafluoroborates via the Meerwein reaction.…”

“…The microjets can be used to generate a cocurrent, counter-current, or even 180° colliding flow arrangements to induce a mixing process. Impinging or colliding jets have been among other authors investigated by Johnson and Prud’homme and most recently by Hiemer et al Lim et al . employed a coaxial microjet mixer for the synthesis of nanoparticles.…”
