Anurans are predator and prey, playing an important role in ecosystem functioning. The diet composition is closely related to feeding strategy, and the information about prey items is useful to understand intra and interspecific interactions in trophic webs. Here we determined diet composition, feeding strategy, and relation between prey ingestion and body measures of Crossodactylus timbuhy, a recently described anuran species. We found 466 prey items from 20 prey categories in the stomach of 66 specimens (15 males and 51 females) of C. timbuhy. The diet consists mostly of Formicidae and Coleoptera, the items with the highest number, frequency of occurrence and prey importance. The diet composition was relatively similar to other species of Crossodactylus. Prey volume was positively related to frog size and weight, suggesting frogs may feed upon any prey they can swallow. Diet showed some variation between sexes. Despite females were larger and heavier than males, females had higher consumption of smaller prey, and ingested a larger number of prey categories. We suggest C. timbuhy has an invertebrate-opportunistic feeding habit. It is likely C. timbuhy uses a combination of ‘sit-and-wait’ and ‘active search’ strategies due to high consumption of both highly mobile and sedentary prey.

Habitat heterogeneity and anuran community of an agroecosystem in Pantanal, Brazil. The Pantanal of central Brazil has experienced considerable modifications as a result of growing land use. The association between anuran assemblage and the local habitat structure of an agroecosystem in central Brazil at the Pantanal is described. It is shown that the structure of the anuran community is reestablished within the new environmental dynamics in such human-modified habitat. Twenty-four anuran species were recorded in the area. The community was dominated by four species (Dendropsophus nanus, Leptodactylus chaquensis, Hypsiboas raniceps, and Rhinella cf. bergi), which accounted for more than 50% of the sampled individuals. The species distribution pattern was adjusted to the logarithmic, log-normal, and broken stick models, partially reflecting its association with agroecosystem characteristics. Habitat heterogeneity contributes to the anuran community at a local scale, thereby emphasizing the importance of maintaining distinct habitats for anuran species in the Pantanal as a management practice, even in in situations in which anthropic actions are predictable, as in agroecosystems.Keywords: agriculture, amphibians, habitat complexity, Pantanal, wetland. ResumoHeterogeneidade ambiental e comunidade de anuros em agroecossistema na região do Pantanal, Brasil. A planície pantaneira no Brasil Central tem sofrido intensa modificação devido às práticas de ocupação antrópica ocorrida nos últimos anos na região. Este trabalho ilustra a associação entre a comunidade de anfíbios anuros e a estrutura ambiental em escala local de um agroecossistema no Pantanal (Mato Grosso do Sul) e mostra que em ambientes modificados pela ação humana a comunidade de anuros pode ser restabelecida de acordo com as novas condições encontradas. Foram encontradas 24 espécies de anuros das quais quatro foram predominantes (Dendropsophus nanus, Leptodactylus chaquensis, Hypsiboas raniceps e Rhinella cf. bergi), representando mais de 50% dos 42 Phyllomedusa -13(1), August 2014 indivíduos amostrados. O padrão de distribuição das espécies foi melhor ajustado aos modelos logarítmicos, log-normal e broken stick, refletindo parcialmente uma associação com as características do agroecossistema. A heterogeneidade ambiental contribuiu com a estrutura da comunidade, o que reforça a importância da manutenção de ambientes distintos para as espécies de anuros do Pantanal como uma prática de manejo mesmo em situações em que as ações antrópicas forem previsíveis e irreversíveis como os agroecossistemas.Palavras-chave: agricultura, anfíbios, complexidade ambiental, Pantanal, planície de inundação.

The association of immobility and camouflage is widespread as a defensive mechanism in prey from varied taxa. However, many experiments assessing the reaction of prey to predator cues are conducted under artificial laboratory conditions. In a previous experiment we observed the tadpoles of Ololygon machadoi (Hylidae) to respond to predator visual and/or chemical cues by choosing backgrounds that improve their disruptive properties, but detected no associated reduction of movement. Here we experimentally demonstrate this response in the species' natural habitat, on backgrounds where the tadpoles are likely to achieve their best camouflage. We also tested whether previous experiences could influence both background choice and immobility in O. machadoi tadpoles. these novel experimental results suggest that a defensive behavior-i.e., reduction of movement-in these tadpoles is more strongly expressed under the natural conditions where they evolved, compared to laboratory conditions where prey and predator were brought into closer contact. Besides, previous experiences are likely to play an important role in expressed defensive responses. Prey species are under constant selection to escape predation. They can develop predator specific responses, but some responses seem to be widespread, such as spatial avoidance of predators and reduction of activity 1. In this context prey species that count on camouflage to reduce the probability of being detected by predators tend to remain motionless, aiding to the protective properties of their colouration 2,3. Reduction of movement is likely to reduce detection probability and can emerge as a spontaneous response when the detected threat is at a distance (background threat), but an approaching (immediate) threat may otherwise elicit an escape response 4. Previous experience can also determine the reaction of prey to specific predators 5 , however there is evidence that evolutionary pressures may have led prey species to develop different defensive mechanisms and express each one in appropriate contexts determined by the assessed threat 4. Both innate and learned defensive behaviours can be expressed even in very early life stages 6,7. Tadpoles, the larvae of biphasic anuran amphibians, are frequently employed in experiments conducted to study the reaction of prey to predator cues 8 , due to their broad range of predators and defensive mechanisms 1. It has been shown that many species of tadpoles reduce movement in the presence of predators 1,9. However, these studies are usually conducted under laboratory or mesocosm conditions, sometimes within reduced spaces in artificial standardized containers where predator cues are manipulated, other factors kept equal, to record tadpole reaction to particular cues 1,10.
