Microguided endodontics: Accuracy evaluation for access through intraroot fibre‐post

Abstract: In this work, we intended to assess the reliability of guided endodontic technique to remove a bonded fibre-post when there are artefacts in the conebeam computed tomography (CBCT) images caused by composite dental materials. We mounted natural posterior teeth on ten simulated models. Forty fibre-post and composite-core restorations were inserted in the teeth. We merged a pre-operative CBCT and optical surface scan on the Blueskyplan TM software to digitally design and subsequently 3D-printed the guides. Two o… Show more

“…The re-treatment of teeth that require fiberglass posts’ removal was the third most common treatment performed with GE [ 43 , 56 ]. The studies by Perez C et al [ 81 ] and Janabi A et al [ 30 ] cover this topic using SGE and DGE, respectively. The removal of fiberglass posts is mainly carried out after a previously failed treatment [ 81 ] and it can be performed with the help of ultrasound tips [ 89 ].…”

“…The main disadvantage of guided endodontics may be the additional cost of procedures and materials such as CBCT, 3D printers, and resin. The guided technique can also be used when removing fiberglass posts [ 25 , 27 , 28 ] or during the treatment of teeth with developmental anomalies, e.g., dens invaginatus [ 29 , 30 ] or dentin dysplasia [ 31 ]. In the four presented cases, all calcified root canals were properly treated using endodontic guides.…”

“…In recent literature, cone beam computed tomography and 3D-printed guiding templates have enabled the location of calcified canals, facilitating endodontic treatment of those teeth and preserving hard tissue during access cavity preparation [32]. Equally, guided endodontics may be applied during endodontic retreatment as an efficient method to access a root canal through a fiber post [33]. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to validate clinical benefits.…”
