Microglial process convergence on axonal segments in health and disease

Abstract: Microglia dynamically interact with neurons influencing the development, structure, and function of neuronal networks. Recent studies suggest microglia may also influence neuronal activity by physically interacting with axonal domains responsible for action potential initiation and propagation. However, the nature of these microglial process interactions is not well understood. Microglial-axonal contacts are present early in development and persist through adulthood, implicating microglial interactions in the … Show more

“…Microglial changes occur in association with various neuroinflammatory diseases, and in the case of multiple sclerosis, several types of microglia (or infiltrating monocytes) abnormally surround the axon, wrapping the axon initial segment of neurons and appearing to be in contact with the neuronal cell bodies. 30 The present findings that some microglia contact the degenerating neurons in the vacuolar structures might also reflect a similar phenomenon to microglial-neuronal contact in the hydrocephalic neocortex. This points the possibility that the brain of hydrocephalic cotton rats has more or less impaired projections from the neocortex.…”

“…While the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis is often associated with oxi dative stress at the cellular level, then the extrinsic pathway is activated due to a damage or cellular immune response [18]. Microglia can function as a substrate of cellular immunity in the brain, and its activation leads to the secretion of pro inflam matory factors in nervous tissue and causes neu roinflammation and apoptosis [19].…”
