Microfluidics for Manipulating Cells

Abstract: Microfluidics, a toolbox comprising methods for precise manipulation of fluids at small length scales (micrometers to millimeters), has become useful for manipulating cells. Its uses range from dynamic management of cellular interactions to high-throughput screening of cells, and to precise analysis of chemical contents in single cells. Microfluidics demonstrates a completely new perspective and an excellent practical way to manipulate cells for solving various needs in biology and medicine. This review introd… Show more

“…flow cytometry, capillary electrophoresis) 29 , they still suffer from a poor control over the cellular microenvironment. Conversely, microfluidics has proven to be the leading tool for single cell analysis allowing for precise fluid and cell manipulation while featuring a scale-size comparable to the cellular level 10,30 . In addition, microfluidic assays can be easily parallelized for testing several parameters at a time within the same platform.…”

“…mLSI is particularly well suited for single cell analysis and manipulation; several excellent review articles have already summarized recent studies [50][51][52], which generally focus on single cell imaging [24 ,26,31,32 ,53-55] or single cell genomic/ proteomic analysis [19,30,56 ,57 ,58,59]. Another field of application of mLSI is protein synthesis and characterization.…”

“…127 Page 2 of 7 Additionally, PDMS is gas permeable which makes it suitable for long-term cell culture in biological studies like cell screening (Kim et al 2015), biochemical assays (El-Ali et al 2006) and single cell analysis (Mu et al 2013). On the other hand, permeability to gases can cause water evaporation during the flow and simultaneous crystallization of the dissolved analytes.…”
