The Kachchh basin is located on the northwestern margin of India. The basin consists of a relatively continuous sequence of sediments from the Mesozoic, followed by the Deccan Traps and finally a complete sequence of the Cenozoic sediments. The Cenozoic sediments of Kachchh basin are mainly shallow marine deposits characterised by five formations viz. Matanomadh, Naredi, Harudi, Fulra Limestone and Maniyara Fort Formation. The Maniyara Fort Formation belongs to the Oligocene age. The field and petrographic characteristics of the Oligocene limestones from the Golay river section were studied in order to understand the depositional environment. The petrographic investigation of the carbonate rocks of three members of the Maniyara Fort Formation, namely Lumpy Clay Member, Coral Limestone Member and Bermoti Member provides important information for understanding the depositional facies and diagenetic signatures. The Lumpy Clay Member has shale-siltstones with interbedded limestones, characteristically composed of a significant proportion of detrital grains of quartz and some lithic fragments. The lithic fragments are sub-angular to rounded, which indicates substantial transport. They are also worn down and broken, bear small cracks which are filled by micritic matrix or mud. The presence of stylolitic seams within the limestone (though not significant) along with mud filling is also noticed. The dissolution is not prominent, pointing towards shallow burial of the sediments. Paucity of marine fossils as well as the rarity of foraminifera in the Lumpy Clay Member indicate a restricted to semi-restricted shallow marine environment. The limestones of the Coral Limestone Member are petrographically classified as packstone, wackestone and mudstone. Thus, the environment of deposition seems to have varied from restricted lagoonal to shallow marine environment. The Bermoti Member is characterised by a lens of claystone, which consists of both greyish to yellow coloured claystones interbedded with limestones. The Bermoti limestones are petrographically classified as packstone, wackestone and mudstone assemblage. The limestones were observed to be highly micritised, which indicates open, shallow marine settings. The Maniyara Fort Formation, thus characterised by wackestone-packstone-mudstone facies of carbonates, is interpreted to be part of a carbonate ramp system. The limestones from Maniyara Fort Formation exhibit signatures of marine as well as meteoric diagenesis.

Understanding the impact of saturation levels on the mechanical and physical properties of limestone and marly limestone deposits is very critical for geotechnical and mechanical studies in the energy and construction industries. This research aims to link the strength characteristics of carbonate rock (limestone and marly limestone) with physical and mechanical properties at saturation levels of 0, 0.25, 50%, 75% and 100%. To complete this work, 100 samples were collected and analysed employing an orderly research facility testing. According to experimental findings, the strength and durability of the limestone and marly limestone declined with rising saturation levels, while the P‐wave velocity Vp showed an upward trend from 0% to 100%. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the limestones employed in this research significantly decreased (up to 36%) between the dry and saturated stages for limestone samples. While marly limestone, there is a drop (up to 32%) in UCS. The findings of a straightforward regression study show that it is possible to predict the strength properties of rocks directly from various saturation levels. Additionally, a number of various estimate connections were created utilizing independent variables like Vp and saturation level. The experimental outcomes showed that Vp showed an upward tendency with an increasing degree of saturation. The deformability and strength parameters of the samples declined with increasing saturation degrees. The elastic modulus and strength both decrease as clay and water amounts increase. The quality index (QI) number for limestone is 45, which indicates that it has extremely good quality and can be used as a building material at 0% saturation. At 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% saturation, it is evaluated at 43, 40, 33 and 31, respectively. The marly limestone samples have high quality at 0% (QI = 36), but poor quality at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% saturation (QI = 33, 30, 27 and 23). This research provides a better understanding of the relationship between saturation levels and the mechanical, physical and depositional characteristics of marly limestone and limestone, which might be helpful in industrial studies. Advance examination of distinctive sorts of carbonate rocks can be more supportive of broadening our understanding of this idea.

During diagenetic stages, the aragonitic skeletons and the inter/intra-corallite cement of the upper Jurassic corals of Hanifa Formation either dissolved or subjected to diagenetic alterations including cementation, micritization, recrystallization, silicification, dolomitization and dedolomitization. The proposed sequence of diagenetic stages is as follows: early marine diagenesis, early meteoric and mixing zone diagenesis, late meteoric diagenesis, and shallow burial diagenesis. Each stage is characterized by certain diagenetic processes. The source of sulfate solutions for dedolomitization in the studied corals is the dissolved anhydrite deposits of the Arab-Hith Formations, sometime before their erosion. A possible source of silica, needed for the formation of chert and chalcedony, is the sponge spicules dispersed in many carbonates of the Hanifa Formation.
