Microencapsulation of potassium phosphate in chitosan and the effect of spray drying operating variables on the particle size

Abstract: Abstract. The use of biodegradable polymers to encapsulate fertilizers is one of the main tools that help to prevent them to get carried away by the irrigation water, since phosphate based fertilizers are highly soluble. Indeed, this technology might improve productivity and reduce both costs and environmental pollution. In this work potassium phosphate was encapsulated in chitosan, which is one of the most abundant natural and biodegradable polymers widely applied in agriculture for plant defense and yield in… Show more

“…The main methods for the production of microparticles currently include spray-drying, solvent evaporation, emulsification, and others [4][5][6]. Spray-drying is a method with the most potential, which allows producing the particles with the desired size distribution in a controllable manner [7][8][9]. Changing of the conditions during spray-drying provides control both on the particle size and shape, and at the same time provides low residual solvent content in the particle [10].…”
