The performance gap of buildings is commonly defined as the difference between the performance value predicted in the design stage and that measured in the post-occupancy stage. Knowledge about the performance gap of buildings is valuable in many aspects and thus is a research subject drawing much attention. Important questions that should be asked include: (1) Definition: what is the performance gap of buildings? (2) Magnitude: how large is the performance gap of buildings? (3) Techniques: how to determine the performance gap of buildings? (4) Causes: what are the reasons leading to the performance gap of buildings? (5) Solutions: how to bridge the performance gap of buildings. By collecting and analyzing more than 20 published works with reported data on the performance gap of buildings and other research articles, these important questions are addressed. Through this review state-of-the-art knowledge regarding the performance gap of buildings is presented. Major conclusions are drawn and future research directions are pointed out.

The aim of this study is to determine the changing contribution of passive design strategies to maintain thermal comfort conditions under climate change in Turkey. A bioclimatic chart developed by Givoni was used for the analysis of architectural design philosophy associated with passive design strategies with the onset of climate change. Typical meteorological year 2 and predicted future weather data were used for plotting hourly climate parameters on the psychometric chart. The largest three cities in Turkey have been preferred as case studies using all year analyses. The results show that the level of thermal comfort increases in Istanbul and Ankara and it decreases only in Izmir due to the influence of climate change. Passive solar heating and high thermal mass/solar heating are effective solutions for the improvement of thermal comfort in winter for all cities. Although the contribution of these changes are for 2020, 2050 and 2080, they have a relatively positive impact at all times. Meanwhile, ventilation/thermal mass/evaporative cooling is an effective passive cooling technique for climate change in all cities. It is very clear that the demand for active cooling in buildings will increase in the future.

Near-wall microenvironment of a building refers to parameters such as wind speed, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation near the building’s façade, etc. The distribution of these parameters on the building façade shows a certain variation based on changes in height. As a technology of passive heating and ventilation, the effectiveness of this application on heat collection wall is significantly affected by the near-wall microclimate, which is manifested by the differences, and rules of the thermal process of the components present at different elevations. To explore the feasibility and specificity of this application of heat collection wall in high-rise buildings, this study uses three typical high-rise buildings from Zhengzhou, China, as research buildings. Periodic measurements of the near-wall microclimate during winter and summer were carried out, and the changing rules of vertical and horizontal microclimate were discussed in detail. Later, by combining these measured data with numerical method, thermal process and performance of heat collection wall based on increasing altitude were quantitatively analyzed through numerical calculations, and the optimum scheme for heat collection wall components was summarized to provide a theoretical basis for the structural design of heat-collecting wall in high-rise buildings.
