Microbiome Remodeling via the Montmorillonite Adsorption-Excretion Axis Prevents Obesity-related Metabolic Disorders

Abstract: Obesity and its related metabolic disorders are closely correlated with gut dysbiosis. Montmorillonite is a common medicine used to treat diarrhea. We have previously found that dietary lipid adsorbent-montmorillonite (DLA-M) has an unexpected role in preventing obesity. The aim of this study was to further investigate whether DLA-M regulates intestinal absorption and gut microbiota to prevent obesity-related metabolic disorders. Here, we show that DLA-M absorbs free fatty acids (FFA) and endotoxins in vitro a… Show more

“…Intestinal barrier integrity has been clarified to be of significance for human whole-body health and can be disrupted along with gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by HFD (43). We observed LC supplementation could recover the damaged enteral barrier in the HFD group using histologic analysis and qRT-PCR assay.…”

“…A glucometer (Yuwell, Jiangsu, China) was used to measure blood glucose levels. Concentrations of fasting blood glucose and fasting serum insulin were measured, and the homeostasis model index of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated according to the formula: HOMA-IR = insulin×glucose/22.5, as previously [25].…”

“…Total RNA (2 μg) was then reverse‐transcribed to cDNA using M‐MLV transcriptase (Promega), according to the manufacturer's instructions. Real‐time polymerase chain reaction was performed on an ABI 7500 System cycler (Applied Biosystems) using SYBRGreen PCR Master Mix (Transgen Biotic), as described previously . Gene expression was normalized against the expression of cyclophilin.…”
