Microbiome and ecology of a hot spring-microbialite system on the Trans-Himalayan Plateau

Abstract: Little is known about life in the boron-rich hot springs of trans-Himalayas. Here, we explore the geomicrobiology of a 4438-m-high spring which emanates ~70 °C-water from a boratic microbialite called Shivlinga. Due to low atmospheric pressure, the vent-water is close to boiling point so can entropically destabilize biomacromolecular systems. Starting from the vent, Shivlinga's geomicrobiology was revealed along the thermal gradients of an outflow-channel and a progressivelydrying mineral matrix that has no ru… Show more

“…Maintaining hygiene is critical in balneotherapy. Because thermal waters are rich in microbial organisms (both natural and introduced) [83][84][85], including infectious Clostridium [86] and Legionella strains [87], and cyanobacterial toxins [88], the waters can be hazardous for users [89,90] if they are not appropriately managed. Cyanotoxins, such as microcystin-LR produced by an alga (Microcystis aeruginosa), which is common worldwide in drinking water reservoirs [91], is hepatoxic [92] and can cause death [93].…”

“…No reuse allowed without permission. reads to individual taxa were considered to be the direct measures of the relative abundances of the taxa (Tringe et al 2005;Gill et al 2006;Jones et al 2008;Ghosh et al 2015;Mandal et al 2020;Roy et al 2020). In this way, for every taxon present in a community, two separate values were obtained for its relative abundance (prevalence) within the community.…”

“…The level of microbial diversity present in a given sedimentary community was quantified by calculating Simpson Dominance Index, Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index and Shannon-Wiener Evenness Index (Magurran 2004) from the mean relative abundances of phyla already determined on the basis of direct annotation of the corresponding metagenomic data (Ghosh et al 2015;Roy et al 2020). Notably, all relative abundance data for the phylum Proteobacteria were split into those for the constituent classes.…”

“…Thermophilic microorganisms are an excellent source of thermostable enzymes and have been utilized in the greater part of industrial applications, for example, food, papers, pharmaceutical, cleansers, etc. (Schuler et al, 2017;Roy et al, 2020). Thermophilic microorganisms are also more stable than their mesophilic partners to natural solvents, cleansers, low and high pH, and other extreme conditions (Demirjian et al, 2001).…”
