Microbiological Benefits of Removing Foam Formed After UV‐Enhanced Ozonation of Poultry‐Processing Chiller Water for Recycling

Abstract: Prior experiments using 250 mL samples of unscreened poultry overflow chiller water evaluated the beneficial bactericidal and oxidative effects of 4 different treatments (namely, O 2 /O 3 , O 2 /UV, O 2 /O 3 /UV, and O 2 as the control) for improving microbiological safety, turbidity, and water-use efficiency allowing its reconditioning for reuse. When excluding foam as in this present study, synergistic reductions . 1.5 log CFU/mL for aerobic plate counts (APC) were additionally achieved after 4 min for all O… Show more

“…This feature is of vital importance when considering an AOP as a remediation treatment in contaminated water, especially in systems in which the oxidant is gaseous. Nevertheless, certain AOP show additional benefits over biological or physicalchemical treatments because they can achieve a high level of foam removal [23] in addition to a satisfactory degradation rate of LAS.…”

“…UV radiation technology has been used to treat water since 1909 and offers one of the safest and most effective disinfection approach for drinking water [28]. UV disinfection has also shown to be useful for the elimination of pathogens in poultry wastewater [29].…”
