Microbiologic Profiles of Patients with Dental Prosthetic Treatment and Periodontitis before and after Photoactivation Therapy—Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract: Fixed prosthodontic dental restorations can potentially affect the periodontal tissues and vice versa, the periodontium can influence the longevity and esthetic appearance of dental restorations. We proposed an investigation on total bacterial load, specific periodontal pathogens, and periodontal clinical parameters in patients with dental fixed prosthesis and different degrees of periodontal tissue loss that followed photoactivation therapy (PDT) adjunctive to scaling and root planing. The study was conducted… Show more

“…Oral diseases such as tooth decay, gingivitis, candidiasis, and periodontal diseases are associated with the presence of different and specific types of microorganisms [9]. The formation of biofilms on tooth surfaces is a predominant factor in the etiology of dental caries [10] and periodontal diseases [11].…”

“…Previous studies have evaluated other adjunctive protocols, such as systemic antibiotic intake and photoactivation. For instance, Mocanu and colleagues [39] proposed an investigation on total bacterial load, specific periodontal pathogens, and periodontal clinical parameters in patients with dental fixed prosthesis and different degrees of periodontal tissue loss that followed photoactivation therapy (PDT) adjunctive to Scaling and Root Planing. PDT exerted significant improvements both in clinical and microbiological load after one month, and these results were maintained 6 months after when compared to chlorhexidine rinsing or SRP alone, especially in severe periodontitis cases.…”

“…Bacterial biofilms are dynamic polymicrobial communities of bacterial strains that replicate and have a constant metabolism and are incorporated into a matrix rich in exopolysaccharides, proteins, and nucleic acids [ 47 , 48 ]. Oral bacterial biofilms represent one of the most diverse and complex ecosystems, developed by successive colonization of over 700 bacterial species [ 49 ]. They adhere to the surface of teeth, gingiva, tongue, and other tissues of the oral cavity.…”
