Microbial Treatment of Soil Contaminated with Spent engine Oil / Biotreatment of Soil Contaminated with Spent Engine by Microorganisms

Abstract: The potential of six microorganisms (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Micrococcus sp, Flavobacterium sp, Rhizopus sp, Penicillium sp and Fusarium sp) isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated site were evaluated for their biodegradation ability. The soil samples were contaminated with 5% (w/v) of spent engine oil and the rate of biodegradation of the oil was studied for a period of 10weeks under greenhouse experiment. The total heterotrophic bacteria count (THBC), total hydrocarbon degrading bacteria count (THDBC), physic… Show more

“…Higher TPH loss and microbial levels were observed in the amended options. Similar trend has been widely documented [30,31,32]. In another sense, the observation of higher microbial counts and TPH loss in the amended options might be due to the diverse groups of microbes associated with potato skin with innate hydrocarbon-degrading abilities.…”

“…This could be attributed to absence of oil pollution in the positive control soil and oil pollution in the negative control soil. Oil pollution has been identified by different researchers [37,2] as having adverse effects on plant development parametres. Growth of all seeds of Moringa olifera planted in the positive control option was recorded [38].…”

“…Exploration, mining and transport of the same in developing countries have led to serious environmental hazards due to accidental spills [1]. The increasing use of diesel in car engines, industrial trucks and generators has led to a marked increase in the demand for diesel fuel in Nigeria and damages due to soil contamination by diesel oil may be extensive and have long term effect [2]. Release of hydrocarbons into the environment, whether accidentally or due to anthropogenic activities, is a main cause of water and soil pollution.…”

“…The mixture was allowed to cool on asbestos sheet and the volume was made up of 100 mL with distilled water and kept overnight. The optical density was then measured at 660 nm wavelength using a spectrophotometer [18]. Total Organic Nitrogen: Nitrogen content of the contaminated soil was determined by Macro-kjeldahl method [19].…”

“…Serial dilution was carried out on the soil sample collected from each site and 1 mL of the aliquot from each of the dilution was inoculated onto nutrient agar plates ISSN: 2456-7108 Available online at Journals.aijr.in Bioremediation of Spent Engine Oil on Selected Contaminated Soils within Ilorin Metropolis in duplicates. The plates were then incubated at 37 0 C for 24 hours for determination of the total heterotrophic bacteria counts [18].…”
