Microbial toxicity of ethanolamines—Multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract: In the present study, antimicrobial activities of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized with ethanolamine (EA) groups were investigated. Therefore, MWCNT were first functionalized with mono-, di-, and triethanolamine (MEA, DEA, and TEA) under microwave technique. Development of functional groups on the MWCNT surface was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and thermogravimetric analysis. Morphological variation was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Then, antimicrobial activiti… Show more

“…2B is shown the Raman spectra of the pristine and EG-treated GNP, which illustrates the amorphous/disorder (D mode) and tangential (G mode) bonds at 1346 and 1573 cm À1 . The D band is commonly attributed to the amorphous (sp 3 ) carbon, is due to disruption of aromatic p-electrons, and G band is related to the graphitic carbon (sp 2 ) [39,40]. It can be seen that the intensity ratios of the D-G band (I D /I G ) is larger than that of pristine sample, indicating some sp 2 hybridized carbons changed to the sp 3 hybridization.…”

“…A couple of peaks at the ranges of 2850-3000 cm À1 and a peak at 1403 cm À1 are consistent, respectively, to the stretching and in-plane bending vibrations of the CAH bond. Based on the results of FTIR, the alkyl and hydroxyl groups are successfully attached to the GNP material through an electrophilic addition reaction under microwave irradiation [36][37][38][39][40].…”

“…The bands at 1630, 1104 and 1044 cm À1 are well linked to N-H bending, n C-N and n C-O, respectively [22,23]. The peaks at 2922, 1507 and 1460 cm À1 are also assigned to stretching vibrations of C-H, C5 5C and asymmetric vibration of -CH 2 bonds in the polymeric backbone, respectively [22][23][24]. The spectrum of Cl-PS shows a peak at 813 cm À1 assigned to stretching vibration of C-Cl [25].…”
