Microbial Inactivation by Electric Discharge with Metallic Grid

Abstract: The area of microbial inactivation by the low-temperature plasma produced by DC electric cometary discharge is increased by insertion of an electrically insulated metallic grid between the discharge and the target object. Gram-negative bacteria are almost fully inactivated; an additional zone of incomplete inactivation appears for Gram-positive bacteria and yeasts.

“…Similarly, while the afterglow plume of the cometary discharge without the grid is focused on a relatively small area, with the insertion of grid (like the mentioned plasma gun) the initially focused plume diverges. This effect was experimentally confirmed in our previous work, where the insertion of a grid led to a significant enlargement of the affected area.…”

“…e gradual extending of inhibition zone from the center corresponds with the air ow induced by the discharge ion wind, which is a characteristic of point-to-point/wire/plane discharges. For more details about the plasma sources and their properties, see, for example, our previous works [40,41] dealing with point-to-point cometary discharge, demonstrative work about the ion source induced air ow [42], or the review of several common plasma sources [43] suitable for decontamination. e spatial distribution of inhibition e ect for C. sphaerospermum for several exposure times.…”

“…Its efficiency was improved by inserting an electrically insulated metallic grid between the discharge and the exposed object, as described in Julák and Scholtz (2013) and Scholtz et al (2013). Here, we describe an attempt to adopt this discharge for treatment of a case of dermatomycosis.…”
