The pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana to one of the major pests of citrus crops, Phyllocoptruta oleivora, was assessed by inoculating mites with different concentrations of conidia (1 x 10(6), 5 x 10(6), 1 x 10(7), 5 x 10(7) and 1 x 10(8)). Treated mites were kept at controlled conditions (25 +/- 0.5 degrees C, 12 h photoperiod and 98% relative humidity) and mite survivorship was evaluated daily. Mortality was found to increase in time and was dependent on the conidia concentration, with values ranging from 24 to 91% for the lowest and highest conidia concentration, respectively. The calculated LC50 on the fifth day was 4.23 x 10(6) conidia/ml. Mean lethal time was 3.98, 9.79, 3.09 and 2.74 days for 5 x 10(6), 1 x 10(7), 5 x 10(7) and 1 x 10(8) conidia/ml, respectively. Conidia were found to adhere all over the mite body surface, especially at the anal region, where vegetative mycelium was found entering the mite body. We noticed the formation of small crystals inside the mite's body that were produced during colonization of the body cavity by the fungus. This is the first report of B. bassiana pathogenicity for this species.

O método tradicional para controlar a maioria dessas pragas é a aplicação de inseticidas químicos. A crescente preocupação sobre os efeitos negativos desses produtos vem encorajando o desenvolvimento de alternativas. Agentes do controle biológico aplicados de forma inundativa ou inoculativa têm sido pesquisados como método de controle alternativo para uma variedade de pragas em grande número de culturas, incluindo fruteiras tropicais. A maioria das pesquisas e aplicações em fruteiras tropicais tem sido feita em citros, insetos. Em banana, o controle do moleque-da-bananeira, Cosmopolites sordidus Germar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) com nematóides e fungus também é considerado de sucesso. Oryctes rhinoceros (L.) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) é uma das principais pragas em côco e um dos mais importantes exemplos de controle biológico clássico por vírus não-ocluso. As pragas-chave em manga que têm sido controladas com diferentes agentes de controle microbiano são as moscas-das-frutas (Diptera: Tephritidae), com nematóides e fungos, o gorgulho-da-manga, Sternochetus mangiferae (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), com fungos, e vários hemípteros com fungo. O controle microbiano de a maior aplicabilidade dessas tecnologias é o desenvolvimento de combinações compatíveis entre entomopatógenos, predadores e parasitóides juntamente com outras técnicas de controle. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Bactéria, vírus, fungo, nematóideABSTRACT -A multitude of insects and mites attack fruit crops throughout the tropics. The traditional method for controlling most of these pests is the application of chemical pesticides. Growing concern on the negative environmental effects has encouraged the development of alternatives. Inundatively and inoculatively applied microbial control agents (virus, bacteria, fungi, and entomopathogenic nematodes) have been developed as alternative control methods of a wide variety of arthropods including tropical fruit pests. The majority of the research and applications in tropical fruit agroecosystems has been conducted in citrus, banana, coconut, and mango. Successful microbial control initiatives of citrus pests and mites have been reported. Microbial control of arthropod pests of banana includes banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus Germar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (with EPNs and fungi) among others Oryctes rhinoceros (L.) is one of the most important pests of coconut and one of the most successful uses of non-occluded virus for classical biological control. Compatibilidade de Beauveria bassiana com AcaricidasRESUMO -Visando avaliar a compatibilidade in vitro, entre o fungo entomopatogênico Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuil. e acaricidas, 12 formulações com os ingredientes ativos clorfenapir, fenpiroximate, amitraz, acrinatrim, hexitiazox, abamectina, piridine, dimetoato, piridaphetion, óxido de fenbutatim, azociclotim e cihexatim, foram testadas em três concentrações (concentração Média -CM, metade da CM e duas vezes a CM). Para os parâmetros germinação de conídios, crescimento vegetativo e esporulação, apresentaram diferenças significativas na compatibilidade entre o fungo e as formulações utilizadas. As formulações mais compatíveis com o fungo, para os parâmetros avaliados, foram as pertencentes ao grupo químico da avermectina e piretróide. As formulações pertencentes ao grupo químico do organofosforado e organostânico afetaram drasticamente a germinação de conídios, bem como o crescimento vegetativo e a esporulação. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Seletividade, fungitoxicidade, fungo entomopatogênico, MIPABSTRACT -The in vitro compatibility of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuil. with 12 acaricide formulations was evaluated. The active ingredients Clorfenapyr, Fenpyroximate, Amitraz, Acrinathrin, Hexythiazox, Abamectin, Pyridine, Dimethoate, Pyridaphethion, Fenbutatin Oxide, Azocyclotin and Cyhexatin were tested in three different concentrations (mean concentration -MC, half MC and twice the MC). The formulations tested affected conidial germination, vegetative growth and sporulation of the fungus in different levels. The formulations more compatible with B. bassiana were Avermectin and the pyrethroids. The acaricides belonging to the organophosphate and organostanic chemical groups, however, drastically affected conidial germination as well as vegetative growth and sporulation.
