Microbial Cell Factories for Diol Production

Abstract: Diols are compounds with two hydroxyl groups and have a wide range of appealing applications as chemicals and fuels. In particular, five low molecular diol compounds, namely 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO), 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO), 1,3-butanediol (1,3-BDO), and 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO), can be biotechnologically produced by direct microbial bioconversion of renewable materials. In this review, we summarize recent developments in the microbial production of diols, especially regarding the … Show more

“…The final concentration of 2,3-BD in the fermentation broths can be in the range 50-150 g L −1 with different types of micro-organisms, substrates, and fermentation modes. 4,25 Therefore, various aqueous 2,3-BD solutions were used for the salting-out experiments. The 2,3-BD contents of the aqueous solutions were 15%, 10%, and 5%, respectively.…”

“…The purification of 2,3-BD from the fermentation broth includes several separation steps, such as the separation of solids, the removal of residual salts, the reduction in the excess amount of water in the broth, and distillation. 4 Downstream processing contributes up to 50-70% of the total product cost, 5 which restricts its industrialized development. Thus, one of the focuses of downstream processing is on low-cost technologies.…”

“…Industrially, E. coli has also been used for the production of 1,3-propanediol by DuPont and 1,4-butanediol by Genomatica (Sabra et al, 2016). 1,3-Propanediol, a monomer for the synthesis of industrial polymers such as polytrimethylene terephthalate, can be naturally produced from glycerol by some microorganisms.…”

“…Vicinal diols have broad applications as chemical feedstocks and fuels. They are produced industrially, largely from petroleum through a series of steps including cracking to alkenes, alkene epoxidation, and hydrolysis (Sabra et al, 2016). Ethylene glycol is of particular interest due to its many uses such as polyester fibers, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastics, and antifreeze.…”

“…Butanediols such as 2,3-butanediol serve as important feedstocks for rubbers, plastics, polymers, pharmaceuticals and insecticides (Gräfje et al, 2000). Ethylene glycol, 1,2propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 2,3-butanediol have been biologically produced from sugars (Burgard et al, 2016;Cam et al, 2015;Chen et al, 2016;Nakamura and Whited, 2003;Pereira et al, 2016;Pereira et al, 2015;Sabra et al, 2016).…”
