“…Aerobic CH 4 -oxidizing bacteria are known to consume 12 CH 4 preferentially relative to 13 CH 4 to increase the δ 13 C values of the residual CH 4 in seawater (e.g., Coleman et al, 1981;Cowen et al, 2002). Gamo et al (2010) confirmed δ 13 C-CH 4 to be an excellent tracer for aged hydrothermal plumes in the southern Okinawa Trough hydrothermal zone, even after the concentrations of other tracers had dropped to background levels. The δ 13 C-CH 4 was recognized again as a useful hydrothermal tracer for the intermediate plumes in the Gulf of Aden.…”
