Microbial biomass C, N and P in two arctic soils and responses to addition of NPK fertilizer and sugar: implications for plant nutrient uptake

Abstract: The soil microbial carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pools were quantified in the organic horizon of soils from an arctic/alpine low-altitude heath and a high-altitude fellfield by the fumigation-extraction method before and after factorial addition of sugar, NPK fertilizer and benomyl, a fungicide. In unamended soil, microbial C, N and P made up 3.3-3.6%, 6.1-7.3% and 34.7% of the total soil C, N and P content, respectively. The inorganic extractable N pool was below 0.1% and the inorganic extractab… Show more

“…The other four non-fumigated soils were extracted similarly at the onset of fumigation. The microbial biomass carbon (MBC) was estimated as the difference in K 2 SO 4 -extractable dissolved organic carbon (C) between the fumigated and unfumigated soils using the extractability correction factor: K C = 0.45 for C (Jonasson et al, 1996;Rinnan et al, 2008). The extracted C was then determined using a total dissolved organic carbon analyzer (TOC-Vesh).…”

“…The other four replicates of each non-fumigated soil were extracted similarly at the onset of fumigation. Microbial C was estimated as the difference in K 2 SO 4 -extractable dissolved organic carbon between fumigated and unfumigated soils using as extractability correction factor: K C =0.45 for C (Jonasson et al 1996;Rinnan et al 2008). The amount of soluble C was that extracted from Fertilizers of P and K should be applied totally as basal fertilizers at the beginning of experiment.…”
