Microbial acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for Alzheimer’s therapy: recent trends on extraction, detection, irradiation-assisted production improvement and nano-structured drug delivery

Abstract: Neurodegenerative disorders especially Alzheimer's disease (AD) are significantly threatening the public health. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors are compounds of great interest which can be used as effective agents for the symptomatic treatment of AD. Although plants are considered the largest source for these types of inhibitors, the microbial production of AChE inhibitors represents an efficient, easily manipulated, eco-friendly, cost-effective, and alternative approach. This review highlights the rec… Show more

“…The achievement of a suitable applicative development of microbial synthesis of nanomaterials is a fascinating emerging research area for the prospective sustainable industrial production. Moreover, fungi were recently suggested as the most promising bio-factories for the production of several nanomaterials (Rao et al 2017 ) that will surely open the way for several medical, agricultural, and industrial applications (Zaki et al 2020 ; El-Sayed 2021 ). Thus, we aim in the current study to develop a facile one-pot platforms for preparation for SeNPs.…”

“…purpureus designed as M630 with high pigments production was induced by exposure to room temperature plasma 57 . Generally, exposure to physical mutagens such as gamma irradiation 58 and UV light 59 , 60 may have a stimulatory effect on production of red pigment M. ruber SRZ112. Results obtained in this study also confirmed the negative effect of gamma-irradiation on the growth of M. ruber SRZ112.…”

“…Endophytic fungi, in particular, have emerged as promising substitutes for their host plants to produce several plant secondary metabolites (Gupta et al 2020;Mousa et al 2021). Recently, fungal endophytes have been recognized by the pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors (Sridhar 2019) due to their distinctive metabolic and genetic diversity (Zaki et al 2020) and their producing capability of several new and novel secondary metabolites with promising biological applications such as cholinesterase inhibition, antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, insecticidal and anticancer activities (Zaki et al 2019;Abdelhakim et al 2020;El-Sayed et al 2020a).…”
