“…From a pedagogical standpoint, service learning in the context of this project may be defined as 'applied active learning' . The pedagogical approach of service learning has been shown to be academically beneficial to partaking students, both within the field of microbiology (Webb, 2016;Fatton et al, 2021) and beyond in wider science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects (Freeman et al, 2014).
