Microarray-Based Technology for Glycomics Analysis

Abstract: In the post-genomic era, glycomics (the functional study of carbohydrates in living organisms) has come into the forefront of biological research because the interactions of glycoconjugates with proteins not only occur widely in biological processes of cells but also initiate infection of host cells by bacteria and viruses. Microarrays have been reportedly successful in carbohydrate-protein interaction as well as cellular surface glycan profiling. This review provides an overview of recent progress in the deve… Show more

“…At this point the application of lectin-microarrays has to be considered as well. The microarray technology was implemented in several variations using immobilized glycans or immobilized lectins, which were then tested against potential binding constituents, e.g., lectins or glycans [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. Furthermore, lectin microarrays were also suggested for analysing the bacterial glycome [ 41 , 42 ].…”

“…In the past few years, studies on carbohydrates and carbohydrate-protein interactions have been implemented by electrochemical methods, 8 surface plasmon resonance (SPR), 9 fluorescence spectroscopy, 10 UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, 11 and lectin microarray. 12,13 These technologies provide a better understanding of the structure and function of saccharides; moreover, there are a few studies on the fluorescent imaging of glycans by metabolic labelling, 14,15 but owing to the low resolution, the detailed distribution of glycans cannot be distinguished. Therefore, more efforts are necessary to reveal comprehensive information on carbohydrates at the molecular level under native conditions.…”

“…Used to screen for glycosidase specificity in environmental samples (Beloqui et al, 2012) Various Monolayer on gold, TOF For study of glycosyltransferase activity (Gao et al, 2012a) yields. To optimize the latter parameter, Unterieser et al (2011) have studied various parameters relevant to quantitation by both ESI and MALDI.…”
