Microarray analysis of gene expression on herbal glycoside recipes improving deficient ability of spatial learning memory in ischemic mice

Abstract: In order to reveal the mechanism of herbal glycoside recipes retrieving deficient ability of spatial learning memory in mice suffering from cerebral ischemia/reperfusion, a microarray system was used to analyze gene expression in those groups with increasing ability of spatial learning memory who were different from ischemic mice. In this work, we reported a comprehensive characterization of gene expression profiles of mouse hippocampus by the use of cDNA microarray system containing 1176 known genes in middle… Show more

“…The compound acts via the following mechanisms: blockade of calcium channels, scavenging of free radicals and inhibition of NMDA receptors. Moreover, some herbal glycoside recipes have been demonstrated to affect nine genes related to spatial learning and memory, thereby alleviating ischemic damage [74] . Considering that multifactorial and progressive pathophysiological processes are involved in cerebral ischemia therefore suggests that drugs binding to multiple targets or that combinations of drugs that act on single targets may be more effective in curing ischemia and related cerebral injury.…”

“…[15][16][17][18] Recently, the global view of gene-expression profiles in the hippocampus has provided insight into the mechanisms and nature of the molecular changes underlying the effects of some herbal medicines on memory enhancement measured by behavior tests such as the passive avoidance test. 13,19,20) To evaluate the effect and mechanism of YMJd on memory enhancement, the passive avoidance test, cDNA microarray assays and Real Time PCR were performed.…”

“…Functional annotation of these genes identified proteins with a role in neurotransmission, cell growth and neuroprotection. Another study involving brain function was designed by Wang et al [131]. In this work, cerebral ischemia was induced in mice that had been maintained on various dosages of a standardized TCM herbal glycoside recipe, consisting of the compounds baicalein and dioscin (see Fig.…”
