Microalgal process-monitoring based on high-selectivity spectroscopy tools: status and future perspectives

Abstract: Microalgae are well known for their ability to accumulate lipids intracellularly, which can be used for biofuels and mitigate CO emissions. However, due to economic challenges, microalgae bioprocesses have maneuvered towards the simultaneous production of food, feed, fuel, and various high-value chemicals in a biorefinery concept. On-line and in-line monitoring of macromolecules such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and high-value pigments will be more critical to maintain product quality and consistency fo… Show more

“…It is also expected to stimulate the development of portable instruments for toxic phytoplankton analysis in the field, a highly-required tool for shellfish farmers and environmental management. Indeed, recent critical reviews indicate the high potential of combining chemometrics and NIR modes for microalgae monitoring and in vivo analysis [21]. Gymnodinium catenatum was the selected species for this study since it is a known producer of neurotoxins of the PSP group.…”

“…Unlike sampling-based approaches, this method does not require either an on-site laboratory or skilled support staff. Furthermore, it may avoid secondary contamination because it is an inherently non-contact method (Podevin et al 2018). However, mass Chlorella cultures can be contaminated by other protists with similar pigments and pigment fluorescence features, in which case this method would not provide precise information on the contaminants in the Chlorella culture.…”

“…These products of consortia biosynthesis can be detected by various spectrometric methods. Both Raman spectrometry and infrared spectrometry yielded distinct bands for different molecular arrangements in a quantitative study of metabolites [162]. The spectroscopic technique of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is also used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of a wide range of metabolites, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids, to identify bacteria and microalgae in the natural population and to detect changes under different stress conditions [163].…”
