Microalgal-based feed: promising alternative feedstocks for livestock and poultry production

Abstract: There is an immediate need to identify alternative sources of high-nutrient feedstocks for domestic livestock production and poultry, not only to support growing food demands but also to produce microalgae-source functional foods with multiple health benefits. Various species of microalgae and cyanobacteria are used to supplement existing feedstocks. In this review, microalgae have been defined as a potential feedstock for domestic animals due to their abundance of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, minerals, vi… Show more

“…Microalgae are photosynthetic organisms that have high potential as carbon neutral producer and alternative feedstocks for livestock [1] and aquaculture [2]. Prediction of biomass in cultivation of microalgae is a difficult task due to the complex interplay of growth conditions such as light flux, medium concentration, and temperature [20].…”

“…Microalgae, which grow faster and show higher carbon fixation rates than higher plants, are excellent candidates for carbon neutral producer. Some species of microalgae have been used as live feed for fish larvae and are expected as alternative feedstocks for livestock [1] and aquaculture [2] because of their high nutritional quality. Other species of microalgae were reported as superior producers of bioactive chemicals [3], biofuels [4,5], and biohydrogen [6], which would potentially revolutionize the production of cosmetics, health foods, and fossil-based energy.…”

“…Overall, microalgae are considered a sustainable protein source for animal diets that do not require farmland. With future advances in biomass harvesting technology and efficiency, microalgae may provide a cost-effective protein alternative that does not hinder growth performance (Saadaoui et al, 2021).…”
