Otoliths of cultured sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from two different fish farms of Sicily were collected and analyzed by using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Metal content (Ba, Cd, Fe, Mg, Mn, Sr, and Zn) was measured in order to test the potential use of biogenic carbonates as proxies of dissimilar environmental conditions since the fish farms are implanted in opposite coastal marine areas (Gulf of Castellammare and Gulf of Gela) characterized by different oceanographic features and human activities. Cluster analysis discriminates samples as different groups on the basis of metal content. Results show that concentrations of Sr in the otoliths have a similar range of distribution and not significantly different between the two farms. Otherwise, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Cd show higher concentrations in otoliths collected from fish reared in the farm in the southern coast (Gulf of Gela), an area subject to a great anthropogenic pressure. Zn is the only element with higher values in the otoliths from the farm in the northern coast (Gulf of Trappeto) probably due to industrial effluent. In this work, obtained data confirm the high potential of trace elements measurements in these biogenic carbonates as proxies of different environmental conditions.

Carp otoliths from two different freshwaters (Baiyangdian Lake and Miyun Water Reservoir) were mineralogically and chemically analyzed. The water quality standard of Miyun Water Reservoir is Grade 2 which is much better than the Grade 5 of Baiyangdian Lake. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in otoliths in mineralogy and chemistry from the two sites with quite different qualities. All the analyzed carps showed lapillus and sagitta otoliths made of aragonite, except for B-22 (from Baiyangdian Lake) whose lapillus consisted of vaterite and sagitta consisted of aragonite and vaterite; all asteriscus are composed of vaterite. It is inferred that the occurrence of vaterictic otoliths is linked to poor water quality. Chemical analysis showed that significant difference of Pb concentration between sites was tested by t-test of the compare means (t-test comparison: t = 2.043, P<0.05). While the sitespecific differences of the other metals were not significant. In addition, a significant difference of Sn concentration was tested as well (t-test comparison: t = 2.652, P<0.05). Average content of lapilli Pb is consistent with the water dissolved Pb measurement, with higher dissolved Pb concentration in Baiyangdian Lake relative to the Miyun Water Reservoir.

Otolith metal concentrations may be related to the environmental exposure history of fish to contamination. Otoliths of pink snapper (Pagrus auratus) collected from the marine basin of Cockburn Sound and offshore near Rottnest Island were analysed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to measure the concentrations of 11 trace metals. The following metals were investigated using their respective isotopes: aluminum (27Al), calcium (44Ca), manganese (55Mn), iron (57Fe), copper (65Cu), zinc (66Zn), strontium (88Sr), cadmium (111Cd), barium (138Ba), mercury (202Hg) and lead (208Pb). Significant differences in otolith metal concentrations were found between the sampling locations for Zn, Cd and Pb. These metals were significantly higher in the otolith edges of the pink snapper captured from the extensive industrial area bordering Cockburn Sound. Life history transects of Zn, Cd and Pb within otoliths of pink snapper sampled from Cockburn Sound typically showed temporal trends that may correspond to the movement of this fish species in and out of this contaminated area during the yearly spawning season.
