Micro‐Macroporous Composite Materials: SiC Ceramic Foams Functionalized With the Metal Organic Framework HKUST‐1

Abstract: The metal organic framework material Cu 3 (btc) 2 Á3H 2 O (HKUST-1) was grown on differently activated oxide-bonded SiC ceramic foams with varying pore sizes. Activation was performed by an alkaline etching procedure under dissolution of the SiO 2 binder phase in the ob-SiC microstructure leading to an increase in strut surface roughness. The influence of foam pore size, etching conditions (duration, temperature) and the effect of a subsequent alumina coating to increase the coverage with -OH moieties was stud… Show more

“…Similar MOF foams can also be produced by synthesizing the MOF in the presence of pre-formed foam. Using both approaches, foams with MIL-101, 182 HKUST-1 183 and UiO-66 184 were prepared. For example, Wang et al…”

“…Hard templates may be carbons [62], ceramics [59,61,[63][64][65], and metals [60,[66][67][68]). They are typically in the form of monoliths, porous membranes, or foams [60,62,69].…”

“…[65] The cellular support materials were previously activated by etching with NaOH, whereas the influence of the etching duration and temperature on the amount of deposited HKUST-1 was studied. The NaOH treatment resulted in a gradual roughening of the strut surface by dissolution of the SiO 2 binder phase with increasing etching temperature and duration.…”
