Micro-hydrodynamics of immiscible displacement inside two-dimensional porous media

Abstract: In this paper, a Boolean lattice-gas model based on field mediators proposed by Santos and Philippi (Phys Rev E 65:046305, 2002) is used for the simulation of fluidfluid interface displacement inside two-dimensional simplified porous media. A new procedure is introduced to allow the simulation of different viscosity ratios on the framework of lattice-gas models. The model is verified by simulating the spreading of a liquid drop on a solid surface and by comparing the simulation results with experimental spre… Show more

“…It uses the concept of field mediators [24,21,17,37] to take the effect of attractive long-range interactions between the particles and the solid walls into account. The role of the field mediators is to intermediate the long-range interactions among the particles located on a discrete lattice, in such a way that the information on the field from the neighborhood sites is found locally at each site on the lattice.…”

“…Santos et al [38] applied the LB model to investigate the liquid junction potential at the interface between two electrolyte layers and the LB solutions were validated against the results of analytical and finite difference method for the evolution of concentration, net charge density and electrostatic potential. Santos et al have applied the LB model to more fields [39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]. In summary, for the optimization of the design and the operating condition of microfluidic two-phase flow systems, the ability to predict flow patterns [22,23,48] and to simulate surface tension effects [49][50][51] is significant.…”

“…Santos et al [45] have proposed a field mediator's concept to the framework of the lattice-Boltzmann equation for simulating the flow of immiscible fluids which reduces computer processing. The method has been extended and applied for study via wetting in liquid-vapor systems [46] and capillary rise between parallel plates [47].…”
