This study aimed to evaluate the influence of a post-machining thermal treatment on canal-centering ability and torque/force generation of reciprocating nickel-titanium instruments. Simulated J-shaped resin canals were prepared with reciprocating instruments sharing identical geometric architecture and with/without post-machining thermal treatment (Reciproc Blue/Reciproc, VDW, Munich, Germany). Using an original automated root canal instrumentation and torque/force analyzing device, files were operated in a combination of reciprocation and up-and-down motion, and torque/force values were monitored. Canal-centering ratios were measured after superimposition of pre-and post-instrumentation images. Compared with Reciproc, Reciproc Blue showed a significantly lower canal-centering ratio (i.e., less deviation; p<0.05) at 0-1 mm from the apex and generated a significantly smaller upward maximum vertical force (p<0.05). Under standardized conditions using the automated device, Reciproc Blue showed better canal-centering ability and reduced screw-in forces than Reciproc, indicating that the post-machining thermal treatment confers superior performance to reciprocating nickel-titanium instruments.

Shaping ability of XP‐endo Shaper and ProTaper Next in long oval‐shaped canals: a micro‐computed tomography study

Aim To evaluate the shaping ability of the single‐file XP‐endo Shaper system (XP‐S; FKG Dentaire, La Chaux‐de‐Fonds, Switzerland) employing a different working time and of the multiple‐file ProTaper Next system (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) using micro‐computed tomography (micro‐CT) technology. Methodology Twenty long oval‐shaped canals in mandibular incisors were matched anatomically and scanned by micro‐CT (Skyscan 1172; Bruker micro‐CT, Kontich, Belgium). The canals were divided into two groups (n = 10) according to the canal preparation protocol: XP‐endo Shaper (XP‐S) with an extra 45 s of instrumentation and ProTaper Next (PTN X4). The images recorded before and after preparation were evaluated for morphometric measures of volume, surface area, structure model index and untouched walls. The data were compared statistically (Student's t‐test for homogenous variances and Mann–Whitney test) between the two groups (XP‐S and PTN X4) at α = 5%. Results Root canal preparation significantly increased all parameters (volume, surface area, structure model index and untouched walls) tested in each group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the percentage increase of volume (107.50%–93.13%), surface area (27.74%–29.68%) or untouched canal wall (13.08%–11.74%) between XP‐S and PTN X4, respectively. Conclusions The XP‐endo Shaper system (single‐file) with an extra 45 s of instrumentation and the ProTaper Next system (multiple files) had a similar root canal shaping ability. Neither technique was able to fully prepare the long oval‐shaped canals of mandibular incisors.

Aim To determine the effect of blue thermal treatment on Reciproc (VDW, Munich, Germany) endodontic instruments and the amount of apically extruded debris during retreatment procedures. Methodology Thirty extracted mandibular molar teeth having mesial roots with a degree of curvature less than 20° and having an initial apical size equivalent to a size 10 K‐file were selected. The mesial roots of the teeth were removed from the cementoenamel junction to obtain a 15‐mm root length. The mesiobuccal canals were prepared to size F2 using the ProTaper Universal system (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), filled with gutta‐percha and 2Seal (VDW) using the lateral compaction technique and then randomly divided into two groups (n = 15). The root fillings were removed with one of the following instruments using a crown‐down preparation technique: M‐Wire Reciproc or Reciproc Blue (both VDW). Apically extruded debris was collected in pre‐weighed Eppendorf tubes. The Eppendorf tubes were then stored in an incubator at 70 °C for five days to evaporate the distilled water. The data were analysed using the Mann–Whitney U test (P = 0.05). Results Reciproc Blue (1.42 ± 0.4491 mg) extruded significantly less debris apically than M‐Wire Reciproc (2.56 ± 1.0232 mg) (P < 0.05). Conclusions Blue thermal treatment of Reciproc instruments was associated with less debris extrusion during retreatment procedures.
