In this work, a study involving magnetic field actuation over reentry flows in thermochemical nonequilibrium is performed. The Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, on a finite volume and structured contexts, are studied. The Maciel algorithm used to perform the numerical experiments is centered and 2 nd -order accurate. The "hot gas" hypersonic flow around a blunt body is simulated. Two time integration methods are tested: Euler Backward, and Middle Point. The reactive simulations involve Earth atmosphere of eleven species. The Dunn and Kang model with thirty-two reactions and the Park model with forty-three reactions are taken into account. The work of Gaitonde is the reference to couple the fluid dynamics and Maxwell equations of electromagnetism. The results have indicated that the Maciel scheme, employing the Dunn and Kang chemical model, using the Mavriplis dissipation model and the Euler Backward to march in time, for the inviscid case, yields the best prediction of the stagnation pressure. Moreover, the drag coefficient and the temperature peak have presented the expected behavior in the simulations.

In this work, we design a policy-iterationbased Q-learning approach for on-line optimal control of ionized hypersonic flow at the inlet of a scramjet engine. Magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) has been recently proposed as a means for flow control in various aerospace problems. This mechanism corresponds to applying external magnetic fields to ionized flows towards achieving desired flow behavior. The applications range from external flow control for producing forces and moments on the air-vehicle to internal flow control designs, which compress and extract electrical energy from the flow. The current work looks at the later problem of internal flow control. The baseline controller and Q-function parameterizations are derived from an off-line mixed predictive-control and dynamic-programming-based design. The nominal optimal neural network Q-function and controller are updated on-line to handle modeling errors in the off-line design. The on-line implementation investigates key concerns regarding the conservativeness of the update methods. Value-iteration-based update methods have been shown to converge in a probabilistic sense. However, simulations results illustrate that realistic implementations of these methods face significant training difficulties, often failing in learning the optimal controller on-line. The present approach, therefore, uses a policyiteration-based update, which has time-based convergence guarantees. Given the special finite-horizon nature of the problem, three novel on-line update algorithms are proposed. These algorithms incorporate different mix of concepts, which include bootstrapping, and forward and backward dynamic programming update rules. Simulation results illustrate success of the proposed update algorithms in re-optimizing the performance of the MHD generator during system operation.

The effects of external magnetic fields on the shock-wave configuration at hypersonic plasma flow field are investigated in this paper. A series of numerical simulations over various geometry configurations, namely, a blunt body and a fixed-geometry inlet forebody, have been conducted by varying the applied magnetic field under different freestream conditions. Results show that magnetohydrodynamic shock control capabilities under three types of magnetic field are ranked from weak to strong as dipole magnet, solenoid magnet, and uniform magnet field. Under the same applied magnetic field, it is easier to deflect the shock at a relatively high altitude condition, compared with the low altitude case. The bow shock standoff distance is dependent on the distribution of counter-flow Lorentz force right after shock in the stagnation region. For the oblique shock control, the function of two components of Lorentz force is different that the counter-flow one decelerates the flow and increases the shock-wave angle, while the normal one squeezes the oblique shock and deflects the streamlines.
