MHC2TA and FCRL3 genes are not associated with rheumatoid arthritis in Mexican patients

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multifactorial disease. A combination of genetic and environmental risk factors contributes to its etiology. Several genes have been reported to be associated with susceptibility to the development of RA. The MHC2TA and FCRL3 genes have been associated previously with RA in Swedish and Japanese populations, respectively. In two recent reports, we show an association between FCRL3 and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), and MHC2TA and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in Mexican popu… Show more

“…Our groups of individuals were recruited in an attempt to emulate the natural history of disease in a patient with RA, and therefore, the tendency is clear to increase the levels of autoantibodies in the late phases of disease. Ethnic and population differences may also account for such differences (74, 75). …”

“…The cases and controls in all groups were matched by gender, age, and self-reported ancestry. However, it should be noted that the Mexican-Mestizo population is a heterogeneous ethnic group with a very complex genetic structure [ 64 ], and thus our findings could be influenced by population stratification. This phenomenon represents a major limitation of this work.…”
