MGIS: managing banana (Musa spp.) genetic resources information and high-throughput genotyping data

Abstract: Unraveling the genetic diversity held in genebanks on a large scale is underway, due to advances in Next-generation sequence (NGS) based technologies that produce high-density genetic markers for a large number of samples at low cost. Genebank users should be in a position to identify and select germplasm from the global genepool based on a combination of passport, genotypic and phenotypic data. To facilitate this, a new generation of information systems is being designed to efficiently handle data and link it… Show more

“…The ‘Pisang Madu’ accession is one of several apparently similar accessions that were surveyed in Sarawak State on the island of Borneo (Malaysia) and in Perak State in continental Malaysia in 1960/1961 (Rosales et al , ). Based on available passport data (https://www.crop-diversity.org/mgis/accession/01GLP005109, (Ruas et al , ), (Rosales et al , )), the accession studied here corresponded to one of the Sarawak State accessions. It was described as a ‘microcarpa derivative’ (Rosales et al , ), but the status of this subspecies is still unclear (see below).…”

“…An additional advantage conferred by the adoption of high throughput genotyping and phenotyping technologies, is the characterization of genetic resources in genebanks, leading the way to make use of this huge genetic potential much more effectively [15,71]. By applying genomic predictive approaches, the accessions can be rapidly screened for new traits, and genetic diversity analysis can aid in developing diverse gene pools for target traits and selection of diverse parental materials to maximize heterosis in crossing designs.…”

“…Resistance genes have been identified in wild Musa plants, and although their expression in transgenic Cavendish banana plants conferred resistance to FocTR4, implementation is technically limited because there are roughly 5000 accessions of Musa spp. [6]. The molecular docking approach is a tool used for investigating proteinligand interactions that has been helpful for discovering and screening for new drugs and antibiotics [7,8].…”
