Urban social space and sustainable urban development are both prominent areas of research in urban studies. The development of a city is closely tied to the development of its social space. The level of sustainable development in a city can be assessed by examining the evolution of its urban social space. Therefore, the two are highly interconnected in a close relationship. However, the social dimension of sustainable development has always received the least attention compared to the economy and the environment. Therefore, this paper examines urban transformation and urban spatial structure, social composition, the activity space and living space of urban residents, the social integration of urban residents in urban communities, and urban planning. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of research on urban social space and sustainable development. On the one hand, this literature review thoroughly examines the correlation between urban social space and sustainable urban development. On the other hand, it broadens the perspectives of urban research, highlights the key role of social dimensions in sustainable urban development, and helps to draw the attention of academics to this topic. In addition, this literature review may provide policymakers with more comprehensive information on urban social space and sustainable development.

La mixtura social se ha convertido en un objetivo de política pública en Chile y Latinoamérica. En principio, los barrios generados a partir de tal objetivo buscan disminuir la segregación de clase en la ciudad. Sin embargo, se desconoce si en las condiciones de mixtura y de entorno en que son construidos se puede (o no) promover sociabilidades pluriclasistas. Empleando dos proyectos de integración social y una metodología mixta, este artículo intenta llenar esa brecha. Los resultados sugieren que por el tipo de diversidad que promueven los barrios considerados, como también por su localización periférica en entornos homogéneos, las sociabilidades que producen no son lo suficientemente diversas, limitando el funcionamiento del llamado “efecto barrio”. Los hallazgos revelan también la importancia de diseñar espacios de encuentro entre residentes, los que tienen capacidad de minimizar los habitus metropolitanos que despliegan las clases medias. Se concluye con sugerencias para mejorar y ampliar el enfoque de mixtura social.

Urban spatial segregation in Santiago de Chile, a prevalent feature of Latin American cities, underscores socioeconomic disparities and shapes the city’s socio-spatial dynamics. This segregation, driven by land prices and private ownership, has pushed disadvantaged groups to the periphery and limited their access to desirable areas reserved for wealthier segments of society. Quebrada Macul Park, situated within this segregated urban landscape, serves as an emblematic case that challenges and expands the classical definition of urban segregation. It exemplifies the complex negotiations over space utilization among social groups, defined by socioeconomic, generational, and interest-based differences. This study employs micro-segregation studies in a broad sense, both as a conceptual framework and as a methodological tool to analyze these dynamics. Through qualitative methodologies, including six in-depth interviews with diverse stakeholders (social and ecological activists, longtime residents, and park employees) and five participant observations, the research investigates the varied uses and meanings attributed to the park. The findings reveal that the park’s evolution from a space frequented by low-income dwellers to a diverse metropolitan park has sparked debates over its public versus private character, mirroring the power struggles among distinct social factions. The park serves as a profound identity marker for its historical inhabitants, who initially fought for the right to use it and today experience nostalgia due to its widespread popularity. Meanwhile, the struggle to establish the park as a public space challenges the city’s segregation dynamics and might promote social cohesion within urban natural environments.
