Metsulfuron-methyl determination in environmental samples by solid surface fluorescence

Abstract: A new environmental friendly methodology for metsulfuron-methyl quantification based on the fluorescent signal enhancement of rhodamine B dye has been developed. A cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) and an anionic one (sodium dodecylsulfate) were employed to preconcentrate the herbicide using a coacervation phenomenon, in sodium borate buffer medium (pH 9.2). The coacervate phase was collected on a nylon membrane (0.45 μm) and the solid surface fluorescence signal was determined (λexc =… Show more

“…Methyl metsulfuron is the active ingredient in herbicides. The sulfonylurea group which is systemic, can be used as a pre-growth and post-growth herbicide (Alesso et al, 2018) , which has low toxicity to mammals, low recommended dosage for use, and is also rapidly degraded in the soil (European Food Safety Authority, 2015) .…”

“…In addition, metsulfuron-methyl could bring harm to aquatic plants and animals and the overall ecosystem [ 3 ]. It is a great challenging task to monitor metsulfuron-methyl in environmental water and soil [ 4 , 5 ]. Hence, a highly sensitive, selective, and simple detection method is needed to trace low levels of metsulfuron-methyl in the environment, especially in aquatic systems.…”
